Basic Essentials - Accents and Accessories

Its important when choosing accents and accessories that from the onset you choose a colour scheme and stick to it, you may choose various styles and designs but there must be some things that remain constant, coordinating concept and colour can get you started on the right track...

A good place to start is with the fabric of your soft furnishings, this can help you in coordinating and contrasting what kind of accents and accessories will properly fit with your overall decor...

Don't be afraid to infuse bright colours to add palatable contrast...However I always say there is a difference between contrasting colours and clashing them...the latter is not optimal.

Be sure when purchasing your accents that you do not lose sight of your vision, everything you buy has to have a place within your home. Try not to purchase just anything you like with the ideal that you'll figure out where you place it...have a plan when purchasing, stick to it and decorate accordingly...

When combining elements go beyond just colour or hue. Be sure to note texture and pattern and incorporate them in you basic design.

Accents and accessories include a number of items, its all about details. From cushion covers, to runners, pictures, candles, glassware, ceramics, ornamental, and decorative pebbles (to name a few)...all these items need to flow together to produce a unique decor scheme.

Mix and match, buy sets or more of various items...

Gold touches add rich flavour to a room. From simple decorative stones to picture frames foiled in gold, to cushion covers with gold beading embroidery...the choices remain endless...its all about how much detailing your comfortable with...

Invest in quality, choose unique pieces and timeless designs.

Coordinate your wall art, with your tabletop pieces in order to maintain a continual flow or theme throughout your entire space...

Choose opaque glass accents with the clear and lucid kind to garner a mix of both solids and transparent accents.

Like Gold elements, silver accents add a shimmer of metallic semblance to your design...

Don't forget to bear in mind the medium of placement when purchasing your accents and accessories...if its upon wood, does it sit well thereon? If its a feature or plain wall will it hang well...if its a glass top coffee table will the centerpiece you've chosen fit well? Always purchase with placement in mind.
